Happy Thursday!

Wow, what a busy day!  Busy...but great!  We just went from one thing to another today, and you should have very tired kiddos!  Bristol and Ryan began their morning in the sensory pool manipulating and sorting bears of many different colors and sizes.  We talked about big bears and little bears and placed them in groups according to their specific color.

During our morning circle, we continued to target weather and calendar concepts using picture cues to aid in production and comprehension of language.  We sang the same songs in an effort to build a routine and maintain structure.  After morning circle, Bristol and Ryan enjoyed their open center time.  Ryan and Bristol particularly liked playing with the ball run today.  We worked on using the signs for "more," "go," "stop" in addition to using expanded sentences to request and talk about what we were doing.  During this time, I am always observing to see what interests them, and then I join in and try to imitate  them and follow their lead with my actions and words, interpreting and commenting on what they are doing.  I also try to use silly sounds and words that are fun for them to listen to and say.  They also both love to play with the trains and engaging in pretend play in the kitchen.

Bristol and Ryan love to play outside.  Today we brought bubbles on the playground to continue to target use of signs and expanded sentences to request more bubbles.  The other children from the DUMC preschool also loved popping the bubbles with us.

During Language Circle we read the book, Here Are My Hands by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault which teaches parts of the body and their functions.  We followed the body functions written in the book (i.e. Noses are for smelling and blowing and sneezing, "Achoo!").  I chose a book targeting body parts again today because repeated readings of the same book and reading a variety of books targeting the same concepts has been shown to stimulate language and build vocabulary.  So at home, feel free to read the same books over and over again if they are of particular interest to Ryan or Bristol.  Also, try getting face to face with your children when you read and play so that they can see your face, read your expressions and body language, and see how you pronounce words.  These cues will all help with comprehension and language production.

After we finished our book we continued to target body parts through play with Mr. Potato Head.  For our art project and snack today, we made faces out of fruit (lemons, apples, blueberries, and bananas) on paper plates.  We learned the different names of these fruits in addition to body parts, colors, and adjectives of "sweet," and "sour."

Today was our first day of music therapy.  Wow! What a treat! We sang songs about our favorite animals, foods, and toys while making choices between two picture cues.  Our music teacher played a drum while using the sign for "stop" as we marched, skipped, hopped, and swung our arms to the music.  Bristol and Ryan LOVED music, and it was clearly a very powerful avenue to stimulate language production.

We concluded our day once again with lunch and music with the Busy Beginners and Terrific Transition classes.

Hope you all have a relaxing and restful weekend.  Looking forward to another great week!
